I never told you about my short stint in Gothenburg when I was an inspirational guest speaker for Cap & Design at Gothenburg Book Fair, I just lost myself in chores and whims and fun. That is easy.In short: It was great.
I was so nervous before and then it happened and was a lot of fun. And I got to see the book fair which I hadn't before.
We took the train down on Thursday, a never ending train ride where the staff got more and more tired and sad of reporting new unforeseen mishappenings. We got to our hotel, had a nightcap (grapefruit juice, because I like to party) and then followed a long sleepless night in my tiny, cold room.
The next day we got up early. I took a long, mournful look at the beautiful hotel breakfast that it was much too early for me to eat. We took a taxi to the fair, found our room, got nervous --- and spoke.
I had prepared lots of hand stamped business cards but no one but my friend Louise and a fellow speaker wanted one - which was okay, but still. One person wanted to speak about the paper fortune tellers that I used for Topography Extended, and one ask a technical question about children's books.
Then Louise and I had some alone time! Lunch, a long talk, comparing our necklace clocks... It was so sweet, and sad to say goodbye.
I met up with my friend Maya the librarian. We wandered among the noise and people, together and apart. It was interesting to watch the different stalls and see what seemed to work and what didn't. I quickly abandoned all ideas of introducing myself as an illustrator, it was too daunting. Instead I took notes of which publishers used illustrations for their covers, I'll get back to them.
I took a long walk through Gothenburg to the train station and said my goodbyes to the city.
I hope to be back soon.
